Connecting Two Dystopian Futures to Our Own

INTRODUCTION TO “1984” (JOEY O’MALLEY)

When discussing the topic of censorship by government in the future, one would most likely reference the two novels 1984 by George Orwell and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Both of these novels were written at about the same time and examine similar topics. They also share many common themes and even have similarities between the writing styles. It is much easier to compare these two novels than it is to contrast them. These two books express each authors' fear of the unknown future and each deliver political statements that have held true from the time the books were originally published during the 1950's until now.

The society that Winston lives in is governed by the Inner Party, and ultimately by a figure referred to as Big Brother. No members of the society are allowed to speak out, or even think out against the government. Every house, building, street, and public place has something called a telescreen, which constantly monitors the people and each of their actions, speech, and even expressions. If a person even appears to have a different thought than what they are mandated by Big Brother to have, this person will be arrested by the Thought Police and eventually vaporized. "Winston kept his back to the telescreen. It was safer; though, as he knew, even a back can be revealing." (3)
Winston is not comfortable with the way Big Brother operates, yet is forced to keep his opinion strictly to himself. If he were to let on to anyone even the slightest rebellious or questioning opinion, the person would turn him in. Winston therefore is completely isolated, even though he is forced to interact with other people all day at work and after work in the volunteer associations. The paradox of this is that all people in this society are in fact isolated, yet each person spends as little time as possible by themselves. No one can is ever given the chance to think or talk for themselves, instead everyone repeats what Big Brother wants them to talk about, and is too busy talking mindlessly to other people to think for themselves.

  1. There are connecetions between the two novels 1984 and F-451. some of these connection are people not being allowed to do certain things. in 1984 people do not have their own opions and can not speak out for them selves. The same issue occurs in F-451. In F-451 it is forbidden to have any form of literacy, it shouldnt even be brought up, or even thought about. Another connection is everyone in each town must be on the same page. No one should have more knowledge than another. They are also both using technology to isolate people. In 1984 they have monitors that watch everything the civilians say and or do, that watches their every move, step, actions and words. in the novel F-451 instead of walls their are tv's, so there is no privacy.

  2. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and 1984 by Joey O' Malley are two different novels with similar paths. In 1984 Winston lives in a world where telescreens are watching everybody in homes, streets and people. In Fahrenheit 451 there's a palor where televison watches people. These two characters are going through technology devices that keeps watching them but with different devices.

These two novels have a way of connecting to the world which we live in today. In both storys the rules are you cant speak out aganist the government and if you speak out there are consequences. In the world we live in today even though we have rights but people still get in trouble speaking against the government or in other words protesting.

  3. The connection between ''1984'', and F-451 is that, both are forced by the government to operate by following what is being asked, or ells they face consequences with the policy. In 1984 Winston is forced to follow every action made being asked by Big Brother his leader.Every house, building, street, and public place has something called a telescreen, which constantly monitors the people and each of their actions, speech, and even expressions.Anyone who does not obeys what is mandated by Big brother, will be arrested by the Thought Police and eventually vaporized. In F-451 Montage works as a fireman. He is forced to burn books. It is illegal to read books. They do not want to hear their overcome opinions, contradicting theirs .In both books they were scared, being forced to do what is operated by their leader. Both men in both book's feel isolated by whats being asked from the government.

The connection from these novels and the society today are, back then you had to obey what was told or else you would get arrested.Today society you do what you believe to do, but if its illegal you would get arrested.

  4. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and 1984 by Joey O 'Malley established the atmosphere of the government's control. They both are not allowed progressive idea. People who lived in two different societies, they were controlled by TV and telescreen. In F-451 people are not able to accumulate knowledge from book, In 1984 people are not able to speak out, think. They were also restricted by Big brother and firemen.

Nowadays, we live in similar society as these two novels. We use diversity of divices because of technical improvement, and are used to live without a thinking, and reading.

  5. The connection between "1987" and "Fahrenheit 451" is in the society when they lived in they didn't have the freedom of remark, they had to say the same things as others, they're not allowed to speak out their thoughts. For example, Classie said, she didnt go to school because everyone did or said the things in the same way in the school even when they watched TV class or played sports, they're not allowed to talk in their own way or even ask questions.

The connection between the novels and our society today is the technology, they had the televisions in the past, the technology in our society today is getting great improvement. We have not only televisions, but also cell phones, internet web etc.

  6. 451 Fahrenheit by Ray Bradbury and “1984” by JOEY O’MALLEY are similiar because they both are talking about a ironic society in which both are control by the government technology They both are connect it because as it shows in 1984 NO members are allowed to speak out just like in F451 they aren't allowed to read books meaning that both have to be isolated with no opinions.also Winston is not comfortable with the way big brother operates just like Montag is not comfortable but they cant do anything because of their ignorance towards knowledge.

Today we live in a similar society in witch the government controls everything with technology they see everything that we do on the internet just like in the two novels. but even thought the government controls everything " we supposedly have freedom of speech and do what we want"

  7. Comparison the two novels, they are "Is this our future 1984" the author name is Jeoy O'Mally, and "Fahrenheit 451" the author name is Ray Bradbury.
F-451 novel, people were more free to live in the world. they didn't need to worry about the government will use a video screen to watch their life even they didn't ready books and burned books they didn't mind. Opposite, 1984 novel the government controlled folks speech of freedom and thought. For example, if someone had their opinion or thought they will be arrested by government so they were afraid of that because they had big brother's government just like communism had huge power. They could control people's acted and thought even you didn't feel comfortable but people do nothing because everything were government.

  8. 1. Both have a strong affect on the reader.
The connections between "1984" and "Fahrenheit 451" both of them described in earlier century, the societies had been controlled by government .
People have been monitored with camera, they afraid to express their thought and be faithful to themselves. The two novels both have a similar tone of described darkness society.

    2. Both of these two novels status the darkness societies. "Fahrenheit 451" is
more like the society and the future we live in today. The author use the
condition to criticized the situation of modern society. People like Guy, he have been living in a unreal world, wondering the faithful affect and fear the action of consequence.

  9. 1) The connection between what you have just read about '1984' and what you have read thus far in F-451?

In F-451 the goal is to make every people from society the same, with same thoughts about nothing. To make people just like machine that only follow simple instruction. In that society firemen burn books because books could help people think deep and differently. In 1984 author describe Big Brother. People those society could just repeat his words and his thoughts. They could not think on their way. Also in F-451 the TV walls are. In 1984 almost the same thing was a telescreen. These things do not give chance to people to think about something around. They just see the pictures on the screen.

    2) What are the connections between these novels and the society we live in today?

Now our society became very similar what the authors both novels describe. Very rather people read the paper books. Most of people use the electronic gadgets to take any information. Also the TV screens start to be more and bigger. People our society have TV walls already. Many people now meeting with each other online instead meeting in real life. In F-451 people cannot walking on the street without reason to go somewhere. In our time this is almost the same. Not a lot spend their time just walking on the street and enjoy views around. Everywhere people just put ear flaps and make wall between them and others people on the street. In F-451 Mildred drives very fast to cope with stress or depression. The same situation is today. Some people drive very fast for relax. In highway if you drive slow drivers look on you from others cars like on crazy person.

  10. Two novels 1984 and Fahrenheit 451 were both of the time and theme. They always share many common and similarities between the writing styles, authors' fear of the future and deliver political statement. These two books had many same things, so when you finished to read 1985, you will read much far with Fahrenheit 451.

These novels showed our socety and government these sensitive topics. It's talk about every house, building, street and public place has the limit and not really free. Freedom of speech wasn't always to exist.

  11. The books "Fahrenheit 451" and "1984" are wrote in the same the period of
time, and have similar topics which is that no one in the society are
allowed to express themselves or even think about against the government. People was unable to develop knowledge, they reading skills. However houses, building and public place they all has something called a telescreen.
In the society that we are living today even though it is easier to speak out because of new technology, the government still not easy target. Moreover people are able to read that much books they want too.

  12. In the novels 1984 by George Orwell and Fahrenheit 451 has connected about people are monitoring and controlling by the government the in the book of Farhrenheit 451 wrote about the fireman has to fire all books and people can't be available to read as the same in the book of 1984 by George Orwell wrote about "big brothers " who constantly monitors any people and each of their actions, speech and even expression as these are connection to the present because of cameras on the street and they hear all conversations by phone or any websites.

  13. In the stories 1984 and Fahrenheit 541, there similar to one another because each novel explains how they way life is there not suppose to do anything besides what they are told to do. The people in each of these books arent allowed to read books nor talk about books. people arent allowed to have a mind of there own and make their own decisions. everyone must follow the same rules. if you break the law there will be a consequence you have no choice but to obey. in F-451 and 1984 speaking of certain things, acting a certain way or doing things out of the ordinary will have people question you, treat you differently and arrested. Even if you dont agree with the law you had no choice but to respect it because you will be punished and have to do time. In both of these books it clearly shows you that technology is taking over the world. People dont use there hands for nothing unless its for a gadget. There is cameras that watch your every move, so if your caught reading a book or doing something out of the ordinary you are being watched and someone is coming for you. Both articles show that people are not allowed to use books, read books, buy books, but there allowed to burn the books. If you pay attention while reading both books you can see that the world today is becoming more and more like these stories everyday. Also pay attention to the fact every month there is some new technology that is coming out and everyday the world is continuing to go round and round with all of these new gadget that help everything work.

    1. replied by marsha- I agree with your post. Mainly because you talk about, and stated how technology is taking over their worlds. You have noticed that technology is a necessity, and the key to how these people are being controlled in these two books.

  14. -Both Novels were written around the same time so they share many similarities. One major similarity that they share is not being able to speak out against the government and constantly feeling isolated while being surrounded by many people. One example on how both novels relate in government is that in F-451 Montag is forced to burn books because it is not allowed to read and no one’s opinion is really cared for. In the novel “1984” every house, building and street is monitored by a television screen to make sure no one speaks out against the government or even thinks about. These rules describe what it’s like to be manipulated into living a lifestyle forced on by technology.

-Society today is more relatable to F-451 because we have become so accustomed and depended on technology that sometimes we fell that we won’t be able to function without our cellphone or computers. Just like in the novels technology took a harmful influence on people centuries ago and it is happening all over again in a more creative, appealing and non-demanding way.

  16. According to the stories, 1984 by Joey O' Malley and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. both novels were written almost at the same time, this stories show us similarities ideas. the novels show us how were the century!, the government controlled all people, what they said also what they think. for example con the novel 1984 the author said Winston is not comfortable with the way Big Brother operates but he have to keep his thinkings by himself. in the story Fahrenheit 451 the author said when montah meet the little girl clarissa she told him about those times the people can't express by them-self. in both stories are the same situation people had to obey the government and not use their own expression.

  17. In both novels, F-451 and George Orwell's 1984 there are similar characters. They live in a very strict society where rules are made and enforced by the government. They do not agree with what is going on in the world they live in. Montag who is a fireman who has to go to people's homes to burn books and Wiston has to help the government of Oceania to delete items of history. Even though Montag and smith participate actively in carrying out their daily missions assigned to them by the government, they constantly question the reasons why they have to what they do. Unlike the other characters in 1984, Wiston is not afraid to seek answers or to do things outside the box in order to figure out what is really going on. Montag also has major concerns which leads him to the realization that everyone is isolated and things are not as they ought to be, especially in his family.

Both books are quite similar to what goes on in our society today. The government installs cameras in public places referred to as 'surveillance cameras' which is supposed to be for 'security' purposes. some of our telephone conversations can be listened to and basically everything you do online 'might' be retrievable by the government. A lot of people in our society are so into watching Tv and reading newspapers that they fail to see what is really going on around them. They are overly distracted by what the government puts out there as 'news' and 'entertainment'. Our society is slowly molding into what is described in both books.
